Abgeordnetenwatch.de

An independent website that offers citizens the opportunity to pose questions to German MPs.

The platform abgeordnetenwatch.de is an independent website that offers citizens the opportunity to pose questions to German MPs from different regional governments. For example, about how much money they earn in addition to their government salaries, or what they think about gay marriage. The resulting dialogue is intended to offer a foundation for public discussion. Today Abgeordnetenwatch boasts around 400,000 monthly visitors and about 4 million page views. Statements made by politicians on abgeordnetenwatch.de are actually often used by journalists as a basis for their reports. Since 2005, on the sister platform Kandidatencheck, there is also the possibility to ask questions of politicians running for parliament. Some politicians have in the past accused the platform of having commercial interests, which the operators reject. Others do not use the platform because they do not agree with various aspects of its functionality.

Sousveillance

It's getting far harder for unscrupulous politicians to bend the rules to suit themselves: online citizens are watching.
