Couchsurfing

Don't want to stay in an expensive hotel? With CouchSurfing it is easy to find nice private hosts all around the world - for free.

CouchSurfing was initially found as a non-profit organisation in 2003 and calls itself a network of hospitality. Along with security concerns, the platform received criticism for its increasing commercialisation from 2011 on, the conversion of the business structure to an incorporated company and the terms and conditions that went along with this. As a result of these changes, many initial users who saw themselves as activists for the Couchsurfing idea were put off. Nonetheless, CouchSurfing had 5.5 million registered users as of January 2013; this number decreased to 4 million in May 2016.
