Along with physical reconstruction, Afghanistan needs new ideas in education to rebuild a just and fair society. Girls and young women need physical, social and cognitive skills in order to take their place in a hugely changed society, but continue to be held back by a lack of educational know-how. Educational consultants from Camp Group gGmbH, with the GIZ and local trainers, developed a range of classroom approaches to support girls and young women develop into autonomous, productive and happy adults. To overcome serious security and infrastructure barriers Camp Group used digital technology to reach girls throughout the country, not just in Kabul and the North. After prototyping a video podcast, unsuitable due to data costs, we produced an instructional DVD, fitting local needs for engaging, accessible and transportable pedagogical knowledge, distributed to all schools in Afghanistan. The project exemplifies a context-specific approach to the use of digital technology in education.
