On FixMyStreet anyone in Britain can, anonymously if they wish, report and plot on a map problems in public infrastructure. So for instance an anonymous user might report an abandoned half-bicycle chained up outside a cafe in Westminster. Photos can be uploaded of potholes or burnt out wheelie bins using the smartphone app. The website forwards the reports onto the appropriate authority, which attends to the matter and issues a response, also via FixMyStreet. FixMyStreet is not just a successful tool for citizen engagement, but also an open source project which anybody can help to develop.
