Free Rice is an online quiz in which for every correct answer 10 grains of rice go to the UN World Food Programme. The questions are categorised by topic and difficulty: you can test your vocabulary, brush up on mental arithmetic, name famous works of art or capital cities, or solve chemistry problems. The rice is financed by advertising revenue from the site. If you follow the link to the WFP’s website “Feed a child, feed a dream”, children from all over the world talk about their dreams for the future11 in short video clips. Free Rice creates a win-win situation: you can improve your general knowledge whilst supporting the financing of the WFP.
Every user can also create a profile and form groups whose achievements are recorded on the website. So for example the group Buddhists Fighting World Hunger managed to donate 10,000,000 grains of rice over the course of just two months with 61 participants answering questions. Thanks to its extraordinary success, Free Rice has become a classic among Social Impact Games.
