The National Day of Civil Hacking is a day when citizens, software developers and entrepreneurs come together in the USA to find new solutions to problems in the neighbourhood, city or country. In every city the event looks a little different – it can be a hackathon, but it can also be a conference or a party. In 2014 there wasn’t just hacking in every city of America; the National Day of Civic Hacking has begun to expand: 132 events in 103 cities and thirteen countries made up “the biggest collaboration in history”, according to the event organisers. Through this, for example, the app Enabled City was created, a map for the city of Palo Alto for people with mobility disabilities, which shows where there are wheelchair ramps or lifts.
