In early 2010, the British government followed the example set by the USA and brought its data out of the shadows. Visitors to the online portal data.gov.uk can now access numerous datasets from public bodies and authorities. Currently, there are 10,400 datasets available from public sectors such as health, education, government spending, transport and the environment (as of November 2013). The website encourages research, with its setup clearly pointing visitors towards the information they’re looking for. It’s worth noting the extent to which this portal is designed with the needs of its users in mind. There is also an accompanying blog discussing themes around open data.
