The Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) is a pioneer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs): since 2001, MIT has made its complete course offerings available via its OpenCourseWare project (and also founded the MOOC platform edX).
More than 125 million people have already viewed the 2000 available courses. The most popular courses are Introduction to Programming, Linear Algebra, and Physics. There is particular demand for the courses in Asia. Responding to worldwide demand, MIT also offers the courses in Chinese, Thai, Spanish, and Persian.
Even though users do not obtain a qualification following the completion of a course, they still serve as an excellent form of further education.
