Pennergame lets players assume the role of a homeless person in a German city (“Penner” being the German word for tramp). They have to collect bottles to trade in, learn to fight, take care of pets, and master other everyday tasks. This means players get a sense of the everyday life of a homeless person. Pennergame appeals to players to make a donation via betterplace.org towards homeless charities in Hamburg. One of these, for instance, is called Verein Mahlzeit (“Meal Club”), and provides homeless people with food. This activation of players is an example of a successful niche model. And it seems to work: so far over 1000 donors have stumped up more than 30,000 Euros.
