ROCK YOUR LIFE (RYL!) is a mentoring programme for socially disadvantaged schoolchildren. Throughout their final two years at school, participants are mentored by trained students. The idea is mainly to help them searching for a place either at university or in vocational training. The success of the concept was recognised when RYL! won the “startsocial” competition in 2009. To ensure that the transition into the working world goes smoothly, good contact with companies is important. All of this is normally organised single-handedly by the mentor him- or herself. The downside to this decentralised approach is that the central office in Friedrichshafen often doesn’t know which companies have already been approached. So far there has also been a shortage of documentation tracking the mentor pairings: Which pairs work well? Which require additional support? In order to improve knowledge transfer within the organisation, RYL! introduced an online platform – JUNity – for queries, evaluation and feedback, and event planning. This lets the organisation coordinate the work of over 600 mentors in a decentralised way, and discover what works and what doesn’t.
