Surfrider Foundation

The Surfrider Foundation is the organisation for marine and coastal protection with the highest coolness factor.

Founded in 1984 by a handful of surfers, the Surfrider Foundation is the organisation for marine and coastal protection with the highest coolness factor. The foundation’s activities range from regional rubbish collecting schemes on public beaches to online campaigns against construction projects near coastlines and national protests against underwater explosions. All their campaigns are organised and pooled using various campaign tools and an interactive map. The organisation’s communication strategy is to play on as many different social media channels and platforms as possible. For smaller campaigns, the foundation uses platforms such as causes.com, where issues can be made public very quickly and effectively. The organisation now has around 50,000 members and 90 branches in 18 countries, as well as a very large Facebook community with over 190,000 contacts.
