WITNESS.org is a platform for amateur videos of human rights abuses. The idea came about when a pedestrian filmed illegal conduct by the police on their phone and posted it online to raise awareness. The platform appeals to people to document unjust conduct by carrying a camera with them and filming. Topics of particular focus are sexual assault of feminists and forced migration in central and eastern Africa. The videos draw attention to human rights abuses and are used to legal proceedings. There are also videos of interviews with victims and experts.
Founded in 1992, WITNESS cooperates with other human rights organisations such as the Habitat International Coalition (HIC) and Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice. Through partnerships with organisations, the platform is now active in over 80 countries from Serbia to Mexico to Zimbabwe. The WITNESS training programme has trained over 3,000 people to date on issues around human rights.
